Lauryn Crowell is a professional dance artist and educator whose background in concert dance has shaped her approach to hip-hop movement and education. Through her experiences as a performer and teacher, Lauryn has developed an appreciation for the versatility of hip-hop and how its foundational principles—groove, rhythm, musicality, dynamics, and individuality—can connect with and inform other movement forms. Working with choreographers such as Jennifer Archibald has expanded her understanding of how hip-hop concepts can intersect with different movement practices while remaining rooted in authenticity and the culture’s foundations.
Lauryn’s classes focus on building strong hip-hop foundations through groove and bounce, musicality, personal expression, and movement quality. Her teaching is informed by floorwork principles influenced by Rubberband training, incorporating concepts such as weight transfer, level changes, floor pathways, and transitions that connect to foundational b-boying skills, including floor control and freezes. Students will explore groove vocabulary, b-boying fundamentals, old-school and new-school social dances, and freestyle/ cypher concepts while developing confidence, versatility, and their own unique movement voice through individual expression and exploration.
Lauryn Crowell, from Birmingham, Alabama, is an explorative-driven artist. She started at Robinson’s School of Dance, whilst exploring visual and performing arts at Dunbar Magnet School of The Creative and Performing Arts. In high school, she furthered her dance training at Alabama School of Fine Arts. Lauryn graduated from George Mason University receiving a BFA in Dance and an Excellence in Choreography Academic Award. She has performed works by Jonathan Alsberry, Jennifer Archibald, Robert Battle, Rafael Bonachela, Frank Chaves, David Dorfman, Tsai-Hsi Hung, Mark Morris, Stephanie Martinez, Doug Varone, Kia Smith, assisted Susan Shields and more. She has intended intensives at BodyTraffic, RUBBERBAND, Vim Vigor, and Doug Varone devices workshop. In Chicago, Lauryn has danced with the companies Alluvion Dance Chicago, Scription Dance Theatre and South Chicago Dance Theatre.
